Most moving homeowners in Salt Lake valley are concerned about getting the packing over and done with than being eco-friendly. Fortunately for you, packing and being environment friendly can go seamlessly hand in hand. Help Mother Nature by performing these green moving tips on your next house move.
Green Moving Tips: BEFORE
While packing your belongings, you’ll always come across some things that you no longer have use for like outgrown clothes, ill-fitting shoes, old toys, never-been read books and more. Give these belongings a new home by giving it away to friends or families who need them. If you will be giving out large quantities of very useful items, donate them to an appropriate organization in Salt Lake City such as Deseret Industries or the salvation army. Did you know that each sizable donation to a non-profit organization will allow you a deduction when filing taxes? Just don’t forget to keep the receipt.
Months before moving out, conduct a yard sale to get rid of items that you no longer use. Remember, your trash could be another man’s treasure. Don’t want the hassle of a yard sale? Sell your used goodies online via eBay, Craigslist, KSL or similar classifieds sites.
One of the most important green moving tips you have to follow is to avoid buying new boxes for packing. While it is obvious that packing involves lots and lots of boxes, it’s possible to move out of a house without buying a single one. Ask friends and neighbors for any cardboard boxes they can spare. If not, head out to supermarkets, bookstores, appliance stores and even to your neighborhood’s Starbucks for any unused boxes. These establishments usually have a lot of boxes they need to get rid of. This way you’ll not only be recycling, you’ll be saving money, too.
As mentioned in several green moving tips, get rid of plastic bubble wraps and use something more environment friendly. Fragile items can be wrapped with old newspapers or magazines and old towels, sheets or clothes. If you must use packing peanuts, choose those plastic varieties that are made from cornstarch or vegetable oils.
Green Moving Tips: AFTER
1.)Once you’ve settled in your new home, make sure to give out your acquired moving boxes to people who need them. If you don’t know anyone who’s transferring to a new location soon, you may go online and search for people in your area who are looking for moving boxes. For safety reasons, agree to meet and give out the boxes at a neutral place like a park or in front a library. Never give out your address to a stranger.
2.)If you need more furniture, scout for great deals at yard sales in your neighborhood. These pre-owned furniture pieces are usually in good condition and are priced much lower than in stores.
3.)When calling up your credit card company for a change of address, choose to go green and have the monthly billing statements sent via email instead. This way, your pile of paper mail will be somewhat lessened.
